Someone posted a link to a few videos on YouTube yesterday, and I was in awe of what I saw.

Ultimately, yes, these are Dove commercials. The same Dove that makes the facial wash and antiperspirant I use. I use them because they work~no other reason. I do like what the company is doing however, and have appreciated it from the beginning. As their Campaign for Real Beauty began several years ago, I began to see how much *my* views of “beauty” were warped by the mass media. I blogged about it here a little while ago.

But these short films really challenge me. They strip the common definition of “beauty” down to its reality: a lot of photoshopping and sex. Beauty was found long before Max Factor made his name in Hollywood, and long before today’s skimpy clothes were the norm. For eons before the Prosti-Tot look made its way in to department stores, there was beauty. Shakespeare waxed poetic about it, and even before The Bard’s time, Biblical accounts talk of beauty. And yet none of the beauty from old or ancient texts match up to what we call “beauty” today.It’s one thing to be desensitized to the images on TV today. I dislike Victoria’s Secret (none of which is very “secret” anyhow) ads on TV and upon flipping through a current Time Magazine at Chelsea Hospital last week, I noticed how much the models in the ads weren’t wearing in order to hawk their goods. I’m not quite sure why a nearly-naked woman would sell a luxury watch, but apparently it’s effective. The thing is, I might be desensitized to the images, but our kids are NOT.

To our kids, these images are new, wow, and mesmerizing. And beyond making children think about life in ways they don’t need to, it really does begin to form their understanding and concepts of what is beautiful, what it takes to be beautiful, and how they view themselves.

Which is why I’m liking the short Dove films. They’re not selling their products–there is no mention of “use our stuff” or anything like that. Instead, they’re using a portion of their profits to make these smart, short films and challenge our thinking as we raise our kids. Which is cool, because awareness is the start of change. I’d like to think that we *can* turn things around, instead of our kids growing up thinking that no matter how beautiful they are, they can never attain what the media shows them as beautiful. The most beautiful models in the world are heavily photoshopped, and although I love (and use) the program, it’s simply unrealistic to continue to hold these images up as “attainable.”

Beauty begins on the inside. This we know. And no matter what shape, size, colour of hair or skin, amount of freckles or wrinkles a woman has, I believe she is beautiful. My faith says that beauty is found in belief and that external adornments aren’t necessary for real beauty. And I’m pretty sure there was no Photoshop in Biblical times. 😉
